Opportunities for Quality Improvement

I was a member of the Illinois Medical Cannabis Advisory Board called by former Gov Pat Quinn. Dr Leslie Mendoza Temple, the primary author on this article, was the Board chair. She and her co-authors suggest solutions to the problems of Barriers to Achieving Optimal Success with Medical Cannabis: Opportunities for Quality Improvement. Bottom line: Remove MC As a Schedule 1 Drug. Thank you, Dr Leslie, et al.

Horses, Women, and Children

When I was in nursing school in the last millennium, I was taught in our pediatric nursing class that animal protections and rights preceded child protections. Here's an interesting read: The History of Animal Protection in the United States.

What led me down this path of thought? Hurricanes Charley, Frances, Ivan, and Jeanne that hit Florida in 2004. Many south Florida residents were dismayed at not being able to take their pets with them to shelters. The same thing with Katrina. Fast forward to today with efforts to protect people as well as their pets in time of disasters. Oh yeah, and sexual and gender minorities.

Inside a Dog It's Too Dark to Read

I belong to a Google group, LGBTQI & Disasters.

[This] group has been created to allow sharing of knowledge, information, research initiatives and anything else of interest regarding lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or intersex communities during disasters.

While in library school in the last millennium, I created a pathfinder for lesbian health resources that was picked up by various search engines and shared among librarians on the interwebs. This curated list was a subject bibliography.

I don't think library scientists talk of pathfinders anymore--now it's lib guides, blogs, or other social media. The Wikipedia library science entry on pathfinder does a good job of describing the plus and minuses of pathfinders, I think, citing the Online Dictionary for Library and Information Science for the definition. I have added the LGBTQI Disaster Management page here to fill in what I currently see as a gap in disaster information resources, one of my work interests.
